What's In A Look

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What happens when the person you want to behold you doesn't see the beauty? The Loan Officer told me that a lady friend of his asked him if he found her attractive. His response, "I've learned to appreciate all types of women." Insert blank stare and pursed lips here. Once I stopped laughing, he told me I was wrong for laughing and to stop being superficial. My laughs honestly had nothing to do with the fact that he didn't find this woman physically attractive, but more so his choice of words. He told me that he had learned to look beyond the physical.

Is looking beyond the physical completely possible? Keeping it real, physical attractiveness draws in the other person from across the room and gets you that initial introduction. However, there must be some sort of quality of character and charm of personality that keep people interested. Cajun Spice was once told that she should be thankful that she wasn't born ugly after complaining about life. I guess the speaker figured life might be harder for her if she were more unappealing. But even she has to be concerned with inner substance. She can't rest on her God-didn't-make-me-ugly laurels.

In the end, beauty fades. The hot body becomes lukewarm or freezing cold. And what's left? You better have the character and personality to sustain you. We are inundated with images of what beauty really is. None of these images are true. Beauty is whatever appeals to the individual and it's something we all possess. You'd be hard pressed to find any person from any corner of the Earth that I can't find something beautiful about. We're all fearfully and wonderfully made. Every product made by the Creator is a specialty item. There aren't any outlets where they place humans who are defective on sale. Their value in life isn't anymore diminished because you didn't find them appealing. You may not float the boat of everyone yourself.

This piece by CNN was very sad to me. The lady who had been teased so much that she preferred the company of her 3 dogs and 3 cats to that of humans was almost heartbreaking. Check it out: http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/05/12/appearances.irpt/index.html

In the words of Phyllis, "You got to what? You got to what? You got to love yourself!!!!" This is better said while dancing, touching yourself, and having a small Mexican man yell out "Yes you can. You can do it!"
